Semester Grade Calculator

Calculate your semester grade from quarter grades, terms, midterms, and final exams. Enter the weights from your syllabus to get a live weighted average, a letter-grade estimate, and a clear breakdown—without putting sample scores into the fields.

Grades and weights

Add each graded component and its percentage weight.

Total weight: 0%

Your entries are used in this page only. They are not saved as prefilled values for your next visit. Leave an ungraded score blank; enter 0 only when the score is actually zero.

How to calculate a semester grade

A semester grade is usually a weighted average of grading periods and exams. Use the exact percentages listed in your course syllabus; there is no single weighting system used by every school.

Semester grade (%) = Σ(component grade × component weight) ÷ Σ(graded component weights)

For a fully graded course where weights total 100%, this is equivalent to adding each component’s weighted contribution. If some components are not graded yet, the calculator divides by the weight of the components with scores entered to show a relative current grade, not a prediction of the final result.

Example: the common 40/40/20 weighting

Suppose your syllabus assigns 40% to Quarter 1, 40% to Quarter 2, and 20% to the final exam. With grades of 88%, 92%, and 85%, the calculation is:

(88 × 0.40) + (92 × 0.40) + (85 × 0.20) = 35.2 + 36.8 + 17 = 89%
ComponentGradeWeightWeighted contribution
Quarter 188%40%35.2 points
Quarter 292%40%36.8 points
Final exam85%20%17 points
Semester grade89%

40/40/20 is a common example, not a universal rule. Some courses use 45/45/10, omit a semester exam, or assign different weights to projects, labs, and other categories.

How to use this semester grade calculator

1. Check your syllabus

Find the weight assigned to each quarter, term, midterm, final, or grading category. Do not assume every component is equally weighted.

2. Enter scores and weights

Enter percentage grades and their weights. Add or remove rows to match your course. Leave a score blank if that component has not been graded.

3. Review the result

Use the total-weight status and component breakdown to check your inputs. Compare the estimate with your school’s official gradebook and rounding policy.

What does the result mean?

Current grade

The weighted average of components with scores entered. If work remains ungraded, this is a relative grade based on completed components only.

Total weight

The weights you entered should generally add up to 100% for a fully specified course. A total below 100% may mean some components are missing; above 100% usually means a weight was entered incorrectly.

Letter-grade estimate

The displayed letter uses a common US percentage scale. Your instructor or school may use different cutoffs, plus/minus bands, or rounding rules.

Semester grade calculator FAQs

How do I calculate my semester grade?

Multiply each component grade by its weight, add the weighted contributions, and divide by the total weight of the graded components. Use the percentages in your syllabus. When all components are graded and the weights total 100%, the result is the weighted semester grade.

What is the 40/40/20 semester grade formula?

If Quarter 1 is worth 40%, Quarter 2 is worth 40%, and the semester exam is worth 20%, calculate (Q1 × 0.40) + (Q2 × 0.40) + (exam × 0.20). This is a common example, but your school may use a different split.

Can I use the calculator before my final exam?

Yes. Leave the final exam score blank until it is graded. The calculator reports the average based only on components with scores entered; it does not assume an ungraded exam is a zero.

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

Check the syllabus and each entered weight. A total under 100% may mean a component is missing. A total over 100% often means a weight was duplicated or entered incorrectly. If you are checking a current grade, the calculator normalizes over graded components.

Does every school use the same letter-grade scale?

No. Grade boundaries, plus/minus rules, and rounding policies vary. The letter displayed here is only an estimate using a common US reference scale; follow your school’s policy for an official result.

Why is my result different from my school portal?

Your instructor or gradebook may drop low scores, include extra credit, treat missing work differently, round at a different stage, or use category rules not represented here. Check your syllabus and official gradebook for the governing method.

Is this an official school grade?

No. This tool provides an estimate from the numbers and weights you enter. Your school or instructor determines the official grade and applicable grading policy.
