How to calculate your current grade
A current grade summarizes work that has already been graded. The right formula depends on whether every item counts equally or whether your syllabus assigns different weights.
1. Simple average
If every listed assignment counts equally, add the assignment percentages and divide by the number of graded assignments.
Average grade = (Grade 1 + Grade 2 + … + Grade n) ÷ n
Example: grades of 90%, 80%, and 100% produce (90 + 80 + 100) ÷ 3 = 90%.
2. Weighted average
If your syllabus assigns different weights, multiply each grade by its weight, add those products, and divide by the sum of the weights included in the calculation. Weights do not have to total 100% to estimate the average for the portion graded so far.
Weighted grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)
Example: Homework 90% at 20%, a midterm 80% at 30%, and a project 95% at 10% give (90×20 + 80×30 + 95×10) ÷ (20+30+10) = 85.83% on the weighted work entered.
3. Understand what the result means
- Current grade: the average for work included in the calculation.
- Remaining course weight: work not yet graded is not counted as zero by this calculator.
- Projected final grade: requires assumptions about future assignments; use the Final Grade Calculator to plan a final-exam target.
- Letter grade: the displayed letter uses a common US percentage scale and may not match your school’s thresholds.

Why your calculator result may differ from your school portal
Your learning management system may apply rules that are not represented in the values you enter here. Common causes include:
- Different category weights or assignment point totals.
- Missing work, excused assignments, extra credit, or dropped lowest scores.
- Rounding rules, curves, minimum exam scores, or grade replacement.
- Ungraded assignments being excluded from a current grade or treated differently in a total-grade view.

How do I calculate my current class grade?
Enter the percentage for each graded assignment. Leave all weights blank for a simple average, or add a weight for every graded row to calculate a weighted average. Check your syllabus to confirm which method your class uses.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
If you enter only completed categories, the calculator divides by the sum of the entered weights to estimate your current grade on that work. For a projected final course grade, you must account for remaining work separately.
Can I mix weighted and unweighted assignments?
For a consistent calculation, either leave every weight blank or enter a weight for each graded row. If a graded row has no weight while another has one, the calculator will ask you to fix the inputs instead of silently ignoring a row.
Does an 89.5% round up to an A?
Not necessarily. Letter-grade cutoffs and rounding rules vary by school and instructor. Check the official grading policy; the letter shown here is a common-scale estimate only.
Are my grades uploaded or shared?
The calculation runs in your browser. This page does not send grade inputs to a calculation server. If you choose to save rows in local storage, they remain in that browser on your device; clearing browser site data can remove them.
