The default values below are a common U.S. 4.0-scale example, not a universal rule. Colleges may use different values or policies, including different plus/minus grades, grade replacement for repeated courses, and exclusions for pass/fail or withdrawn classes.
Semester GPA vs. cumulative GPA
Semester GPA measures the courses included in one term. Each course is weighted by its GPA credit hours, so a four-credit class affects the result more than a one-credit class with the same grade.
Cumulative GPA combines the quality points from prior coursework with the quality points earned in the current term. To estimate it correctly, use the GPA credits already counted in your prior GPA—not necessarily all credits earned or attempted.
This calculator assumes the entered prior GPA and credits can be combined directly with the current term. It does not automatically apply institution-specific repeat-course, transfer-credit, pass/fail, academic-forgiveness, or rounding rules.

Multiply each course’s grade-point value by its GPA credits to get quality points. Add the quality points across the included courses and divide by the total GPA credits.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Multiply your prior GPA by the prior GPA credits to estimate prior quality points. Add current-term quality points, then divide by prior GPA credits plus current-term GPA credits.
Does every college use the same 4.0 scale?
No. Grade-point values, plus/minus rules, repeat-course policies, rounding, and the credits counted toward GPA vary by institution. Use the rules in your college’s official catalog or transcript guide.
Should I include pass/fail, withdrawn, or repeated courses?
It depends on your college’s policy. These course types may be excluded from GPA credits, treated differently, or subject to grade-replacement rules. Confirm how your institution handles them before entering credits.
Why might this result differ from my transcript?
Your institution may use another grade scale, apply rounding, exclude certain courses, count repeated courses differently, or include transfer and academic-forgiveness rules. This calculator is an estimate, not an official academic record.
