Middle schools can use different grading scales. This calculator uses a standard letter-to-4.0 conversion and is not an official school record.
What is a middle school GPA?
A middle school GPA summarizes course grades as grade-point values. Not every middle school uses GPA, and the calculation can differ from one school or district to another. This page provides a standard 4.0-scale estimate for users whose school uses letter grades.
How a 4.0-scale calculation works
The calculator maps letter grades to grade points and averages those values. If every course has the same credit value, this is a simple average. If credits differ, the calculation gives more weight to courses with more credits.
Example
Suppose three equally weighted courses produce grade-point values of 4.0, 3.0, and 3.7. Their average is 3.57 before rounding. If one course has twice the credit value of the others, that course has twice the influence on the result.
Why middle school GPA rules vary
Some schools record letter grades but do not publish a GPA. Others use percentages, standards-based reporting, semester grades, or a local conversion table. Some districts also use different rules for advanced courses. Use your school’s grading guide when an official number is required.
How to get the most useful result
- Use the final grades shown on your report card.
- Confirm the school’s letter-to-point conversion.
- Enter credits only when the school uses them.
- Do not add a weighting bonus unless the school’s published method calls for one.
- Keep the unrounded course values until the final step.
When should students use a middle school GPA?
It can be useful for understanding an academic record, checking a calculation, or preparing for a program that asks for a GPA. However, a middle school GPA does not automatically translate to the GPA method used by a high school. Keep the original report card and grading scale as the authoritative record.
